Wix, Squarespace, WordPress or custom: which fits a high-end business?
Choose Squarespace or Wix if you want to build and edit the site yourself, WordPress if you publish often and have someone to maintain it, and custom code if you sell on quality and want a distinct, fast site you own. Who edits it, how it performs on a phone and whether you can take it with you matter most.

A note on where we stand
We build custom-coded sites, so weigh our view with that in mind. We've tried to make this useful either way: where a builder is the better fit, the table says so, and the speed figures come from other businesses' sites, not ours.
The four options side by side
| Compared | Wix | Squarespace | WordPress | Custom-coded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Owners who want to build it themselves, quickly | Design-minded owners who'll edit often | Sites that publish a lot, with someone to maintain them | Businesses that sell on quality and want a distinct, fast site they own |
| To get started | Your time, plus a plan from about $17 a month on a yearly plan | Your time, plus $19 to $99 a month on a yearly plan | The software is free; hosting, a theme and usually a developer cost extra | A design and build fee; ours starts at $3,000 |
| Every year after | The plan | The plan | Hosting, plus updates to the core, theme and plugins | Hosting, plus a care plan if you want one |
| Who edits it | You, in a drag-and-drop editor | You, within the template's structure | You or a developer, depending on the build | A developer or care plan; with us, Site Care |
| Can you take it elsewhere? | No. Wix sites run only on Wix; your domain can move | Partly. The export covers some pages and one blog, not the design | Yes. Open-source software that runs on any host | Yes. Plain files that run on any host |
| Median mobile speed score on local business sites | Too few sites to report (6 found) | 39.5 out of 100 (10 sites) | 46 out of 100 (60 sites) | 46 out of 100 for sites with no builder fingerprint (21 sites) |
Speed row: Lighthouse mobile performance scores (0 to 100) from our 2026 study of independent business sites in the Hinsdale and Oak Brook chambers. Medians are shown only where at least eight sites were measured; Wix had fewer. The custom-coded column uses sites that showed no fingerprint of a known builder, a group that includes custom code and less common platforms.
What local businesses actually use
Of the 122 local business websites that loaded in our phone test, 49% ran on WordPress, 8% on Squarespace, 7% on Shopify and 5% on Wix. 17% showed no fingerprint of a known builder, which usually means custom code or a less common platform.
The speed figures don't prove that a platform causes a score. A page loaded with large photos and third-party widgets is slow anywhere. They do show what businesses around here end up with on each platform in practice, which is the more useful number when you're choosing.
When each one is the right answer
- Squarespace, if you want to change the site yourself every week, you're comfortable inside a template's structure and speed isn't your edge. Our deeper comparison: Squarespace or a custom website.
- Wix, if you want to start today and build it yourself, and you're comfortable that the site can only ever live on Wix.
- WordPress, if you publish often, need plugins for features like memberships, and have a developer or care plan keeping the core, theme and plugins updated. In our experience maintaining WordPress sites, the ones without regular updates get slower and more fragile over time.
- Custom code, if the website is part of how you prove quality, you want it fast on a phone and you want to own every file. You trade away do-it-yourself editing; changes go through a developer.
Questions that settle it
- Who will make changes?
- If it's you, every week, a builder. If it's someone else, every so often, custom code or a maintained WordPress site.
- How much does speed matter?
- If customers find you on their phones and compare you with competitors, a lot.
- What happens if you leave?
- A Wix site stays on Wix. A Squarespace export leaves the design behind. WordPress and custom sites move with you.
- Does it need to look like nobody else?
- Templates are shared by definition. If looking distinct is part of what you sell, that points to custom.
Common questions
Is WordPress the same as a custom website?
No. WordPress is a platform, usually with a theme and plugins someone else wrote. A custom-coded site is written for one business in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no platform underneath.
Can I move from Wix to a custom site?
Yes, though nothing transfers automatically: Wix sites can't run anywhere else, so the new site is rebuilt and your domain is pointed at it. Your domain, words and photos come with you.
Which one is best for SEO?
Any of them can rank. What matters more is what you put on the site, how fast it loads on a phone and whether search engines can read it. Our local SEO guide covers what moves local results.
