A hillside terrace in Burr Ridge

- A wooded half-acre falling twelve feet from the house to the creek
- Problem
- No usable lawn, water running toward the foundation and a yard nobody used
- Plan
- Three terraces linked by wide stone steps, a fire terrace off the kitchen and a shade garden on the slope
- Materials
- Wisconsin fieldstone, bluestone treads, ferns, hellebores and native sedges
Four seasons
Planned for February, not just June
A garden here spends four months under frost. We design the bones first: evergreen structure, stone that looks good wet and paths that work in snow. The flowers come second.
Every plan includes a winter view from the windows you look out of most.
